It’s not a pleasant truth to be confronted with, but human beings are utterly and completely depraved…sinful through and through. Therefore, we realize that we’re totally unworthy of the gift of eternal salvation that we’ve received from God by faith in Jesus…but that’s where God’s amazing grace enters the picture. “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me!”

Ephesians 2:4-9

4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved ), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

“Grace never ignores the awful truth of our depravity. In fact, it emphasizes it. The worse we realize we are, the greater we realize God’s grace is. Grace isn’t about God lowering His standards. It’s about God fulfilling those standards through the substitutionary suffering of the Standard-setter. Christ went to the cross because He would not ignore the truths of His holiness and our sin. Grace never ignores or violates truth. Grace gave what truth demanded: the ultimate sacrifice for our sins.”  ~ Randy Alcorn
